시를 잊은 성도에게-“야생의 평화” / 웬델 베리

세상에 대한 절망이 내 안에 자랄 때

그리고 나와 내 아이들의 삶이 어찌될까 걱정하다가

한밤 중에 아주 작은 소리에도 잠을 깰 때면

나는 청둥오리들이 자신의 아름다운 자태를 뽐내고

큰 왜가리가 먹이를 먹고 있는 호숫가 나무 아래에 가서 눕습니다

 

그곳에서 나는 닥쳐올 근심에 대한 생각으로

미리 자신들의 삶을 억누르지 않는 야생의 평화에 젖어 들고

고요한 물의 존재로 빠져듭니다

 

그리고 나는 낮에는 보이지 않던 별들이

저 먼 하늘에서 빛을 담고 날 기다리고 있음을 느낍니다

 

잠시 그렇게 세상의 은총 안에서 쉬는 동안

나는 자유롭습니다

When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

 

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

 

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
